Shakespeare and the Law - Part1: A Conversation with Prof. M. Kramer ~ Lindagine.it

Shakespeare and the Law: Legal talks with Prof. M. Kramer (Part 1 ) ~ Lindagine.it

ABSTRACT:
This interview, hosted by Linda Cianci (Lindagine), features Professor Matthew Kramer — one of the most esteemed legal philosophers and a full professor at Cambridge University. It delves into the complex relationship between the Bard’s plays (W. Shakespeare) and the law, with a particular focus on the concept of justice.
Several of Shakespeare’s most renowned plays — The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and Measure for Measure — are examined to demonstrate not only the enduring relevance of classical literature in approaching legal themes, but also how the law can be used both as an instrument of fairness and as a tool of power and control. This duality calls for continuous awareness and reflection.
Through the reading and analysis of selected acts and scenes, the conversation addresses profound questions about human nature — a central theme in Shakespeare’s work — as well as the dangers of a legal system that, when applied rigidly and without discernment, may paradoxically become unjust.
While maintaining due respect for the historical context in which these works were written, the interview also ventures into contemporary reinterpretations of selected scenes, offering insights and prompts for further reflection — all in line also with the guiding motto of The Lindagine Podcast: “Think simple, think critical.”
